CERT

Learn how to prepare for the unexpected by taking the free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training from the Shelby County Office of Preparedness. CERT students learn life-saving skills; gain a new confidence that they will know what do before, during and after a disaster. And be able to assist family, neighbors, and co-workers until the professional rescuers arrive on the scene.

CERT training is presented through lectures, videos, and hands-on exercises to teach students what to do before, during, and after a disaster.

Modules include:

  • fire suppression (extinguishing a small fire with an ABC fire extinguisher)
  • disaster psychology
  • medical triage and first aid
  • hazardous materials
  • disaster preparation (learn how to create a “go kit” for home, work, and auto)
  • terrorism
  • light search and rescue

This is a 16 hour course taught over 2 days. Students must attend both Saturdays to obtain a certificate.
